The miracle of Jesus turning water into wine in John 2 is a well-known story. At the wedding feast in Cana of Galilee, the host's wine was exhausted. Mary, Jesus’s mother, told Jesus, and He instructed the servants to fill six stone jars with water, and then let the servants scoop it out and give it to the master of the banquet. And when the master of banquet had tasted the wine, he called the bridegroom, and said to him “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”

This household name miracle has a lot of spiritual light and relevance.

The crises of life can occur everywhere and at any time; when the wine runs out, all that is left is six empty stone jars. But the presence of the Lord can turn a crisis into a turnaround.

Tasteless water becomes sweet wine (2Co 5:17); the Lord Jesus can transform an empty life into a life of abundance. (Jn 10:10)

How fleeting are earthly pleasures; but the joy of the Lord Jesus is true satisfaction and is everlastingly new. Therefore, emptiness and contentment, disappointment and joy, outward and inward, are all very different because of Jesus.

The world always gives you the "best" first, but when you are hooked, things begin to get worse and worse; but the Lord's blessing is continuous, the last is the best." (1Co 2:9)

Moses' first miracle was to turn water into blood, representing judgment (Ex. 7:14-24); the Lord Jesus' first miracle was to turn water into wine (Jn. 2:1-11), demonstrating grace.

It was wise and blessed for the couple to invite Jesus to the wedding of Canaan back in the day; it will be equally wise and blessed for you to invite Jesus to be present in your marriage and family today.

The obedience and cooperation of the servant in this miracle is a condition for the Lord's blessing. Likewise, the obedience of believers today is a condition for believers to be used and be blessed by the Lord.

The Lord's provision for man always exceeds what men ask and think, for His grace is sufficient. (2Co 12:9)

The Lord Jesus is the Lord of time, space, and nature, and He is the Lord Almighty who is fully available to meet your needs and solve your problems. Therefore, seek Him first when you encounter a problem.

Turning water into wine was the first miracle Jesus performed to reveal His glory so that His disciples would see and believe in Him; in turn, if you believe in Him today, you will see the glory of God. (Jn 11:40)

The words, "on the third day", at the beginning, foreshadow the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ; the wedding foreshadow the future marriage feast of the Lamb of Jesus Christ; and the water to wine foreshadow the future eternal satisfaction and joy of believers in heaven. (Isa 25:6; KJV 19:9)

The theological significance of turning water into wine is the gospel truth it embodies. Jesus removed and redeemed the people from the shame and manipulation of sin, and from the shackles and slavery of death through His vicarious death.

Happy Mother's Day to all mothers today and may the peace of the Lord Jesus be with all mothers in the heaviness and oppression of the epidemic.

Reading John 2 on Mother's Day, I hope to see a different perspective on the spiritual character of Mary, the mother of the Lord Jesus, worthy of our imitation.

Mary's love.

Talking about mother, we naturally think of mother’s love, which is the sublime emotion on earth closest to God's selfless love. The most ordinary mothers recorded in the Bible, such as the widow of Zarephath, the Lady at Shunem, the Canaanite woman, and even Saul's concubine Risbah, all possessed a noble and respectable mother’s l love.

The second chapter of John's Gospel does not mention much, but no one would doubt, Mary's deep maternal love for Jesus.

There is a scene in the movie "The Passion of the Christ", when Jesus was carrying the cross on the whipped and bloodied body, and walking to Golgotha with difficulty, Mary was sitting motionless, with a stiff, stagnant, twitching expression on her face... But suddenly, when Jesus' weak body was unable to bear the heavy cross and fall to the ground, the heavy sound struke Mary's heart, she run quickly, pulled up Jesus' bloody face and said, "I am here, I am here..." Then there was a memory shot, when the child Jesus fall to the ground, Mary run quickly, picked up the child Jesus and said, "I am here, I am here..." There was no such record in the Bible, but such a plot was a rational arrangement by the movie director, showing Mary's deep maternal love.

When Jesus was born, he was "wrapped in cloth and placed in a manger." (Lk 2:7) In his early childhood, Jesus was nourished and loved by Mary, and the Bible says that "(his) wisdom and strength...grew together." (Lk 2:52) When Jesus was in the temple as a child, Mary "came to (him) with grief." (Lk 2:48) When Jesus came out to preach as an adult, Mary went to him, loved and cared for him. (Mk 3:31) When Jesus was crucified, Mary stood silently under the cross (Jn 19:25) and endured the intense pain that "your own heart shall be pierced with a sword." (Lk 2:35) When Jesus was buried, Mary and the other women sat against the tomb... (Mt 27:61; Mk 15:47) On the morning of His resurrection, Mary was there... (Mt 28:1; Mk 16:1)

In John chapter 2, Mary's maternal love translates into even more broad love.

At the wedding feast in Cana, Mary was there. Some people speculated that this wedding feast of Cana may well be the wedding of Joseph and Mary's daughter, the sister of Jesus. But this speculation is unlikely, for the Bible says, "Jesus and His disciples had been invited to the seat." (Jn 2:2) If it was the wedding of Jesus' sister, presumably Joseph had been dead by this time, and Jesus, as the eldest brother to take the responsibility of the Father, would be obligated to be there, not by invitation.

Thus, it is likely that the Canaanite wedding feast was the wedding of a close relative of Mary. Jewish culture is similar to Chinese culture, and weddings are usually attended by family and friends. Since Mary's family was poor, it is likely that this relative was not very wealthy, which is why the wedding banquet "ran out of wine". Mary's broad love that goes beyond mere maternal love is evident in her effort to help her friends and relatives through their difficulties.

Mary’s Faith

When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”

These were the first words spoken by Mary, the mother of Jesus, revealing her amazing faith. Mary knew that the only one who could solve this problem at this wedding feast was Jesus.

For Mary knew who Jesus was.

Mary had an extraordinary faith, and because of that, she was chosen by God to be the mother of Christ, who is the Savior of mankind.

When Mary was still an unmarried virgin, the angel appeared to her and said, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. " (Lk. 1:30-32)

When Mary answered, "How will this be,since I am a virgin?" (Lk. 1:34), the seeming doubt happened to be Mary's confidence. For Mary did not ask for proofs because of unbelief, as Zechariah did; she only asked because she did not understand. The angel replied, "The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God." (Luke 1:35)

Therefore, Mary knew from the beginning that Jesus was the Son of God born through her virginity, and she knew Jesus clearly from the beginning.

Mary was convinced of the identity of Jesus. Such assurance was the motivation for Mary and Joseph to raise the child Jesus according to the Word of God. "Every year at the Passover, His parents went up to Jerusalem, ... going up according to the rules of the feast." (Lk 2:41-42) It is seen that in Jesus' early childhood and childhood, Joseph and Mary set godly examples before Him and gave him spiritual teachings.

Thus, when the wine at Cana's wedding feast ran out, Mary knew that Jesus was the only one who could solve the problem. So she went straight to Jesus and calmly said to Him, "They have no more wine."

How could Mary's surprising calmness not be a sign of her confidence? She didn’t even tell Jesus what to do, she just brought the problem to Jesus: "They are out of wine."

Mary's faith is the model for all mothers today, and the model for all believers: bring your questions to Jesus, who is the only answer!

Mary knew Jesus clearly from the beginning to the end. Mothers today, are you also well aware and convinced of the identity of Jesus?

He is the Christ, He is the Son of God, He is the Savior of mankind, He is the only way, the truth, the life. Such assurance is the very purpose of the book of John. " But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name." (Jn 20:31)

As a mother, not only should you know Jesus yourself, but you are also diligent in teaching your children. " Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. ……Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up." (Deuteronomy 6:5-7)

Mary's conviction of Jesus' identity sustained her throughout her life so that she could get through all the misunderstandings, the slander, the hardships, the pain, and finally standing under the cross and allowing her heart to be pierced by the sword.

For today’s mothers ( also include anyone ), if you have the certainty of the identity of Jesus Christ, He can be a source of motivation for you in any situation.

Mary's obedience

His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

These are the second words of Mary, which reveal Mary's complete obedience.

In addition to extraordinary faith, Mary's complete obedience was another factor in God's choice of her as the Messiah’s Mother.

When the angel told Mary that she would "conceive and give birth to a son," (Lk 1:31) and that "the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God" (Lk 1:35), Mary replied, "I am the Lord’s servant. May your word to me be fulfilled." (Lk 1:38)

What did Mary's complete obedience cost herself?

She was likely abandoned by her fiancé Joseph, thrown out of the house by her parents, and stoned to death by the Jews. In fact, her fiancé, Joseph, was planning to do just that. "Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. ”(Mt 1:18-19)

Mary is likely to carry the scandal of adultery for the rest of her life. The humiliation and slander that Mary endured can be seen in John 8, where the Jews not without sarcasm said in their debate with Jesus, " We are not illegitimate children”(Jn 8:41).

What price did Mary have to pay besides carrying the shame and insults?

Mary endured the hardships of being heavily pregnant and made the long journey to Bethlehem. There was no midwife and no room in the inn, so Jesus had to be born in a manger. Shortly afterwards, to escape the prosecution of Herod, Mary together with Joseph took Jesus to Egypt, and later carefully returned to Nazareth. Mary was still a young lady at the time of Jesus' birth, and Mary and Joseph were poor. Did Mary ever worry about how she would raise Jesus, the Son of God?

Mary, however, put it all aside and simply obeyed the will of God.

Mary said to Jesus, "They have no more wine." But Jesus answered, "Mother, why do you involve me? My hour has not yet come." (Jn 2:4) Jesus is to tell His mother that all His agenda of action is to follow the Father's will and timetable.

Mary said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

So, what exactly was Jesus going to do, or how He was going to do it, Mary gave sovereignty to Jesus, not herself. But what she was firmly convinced of was the identity of Jesus and the power of Jesus.

“Do whatever He tells you.”(John 2:5,NIV)

“Whatever He says to you, do it.”(John 2:5,NKJV)

It has been said that this is a sermon message from Mary to mothers today, and to all people: "Whatever He says to you, do it."

Today’s mothers would do well to say to children from time to time, "Whatever Jesus Christ says to you, do it." Then she is a competent mother.

What did the Lord Jesus say to us? --- A lot.

Repent: "The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!" (Mark 1:15)

Believe: " Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him." (Jn 3:14-15)

Follow: "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me." (Lk 9:23)

Rest: " Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." (Mt 11:28)

Connect: " I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. (Jn 15:5)

Love: "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another." (Jn 13:34)

Treat others:"So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets." (Mt 7:12)

Preach: " Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." (Mt 28:19-20)

Eternal life: " Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent." (Jn 17:3)

All of this, and much more in the Gospels, is what Jesus commanded us to do. Our obligation, therefore, is to obey Him and do what He says.

By Mary's faith and obedience, the Lord Jesus granted her request. Jesus instructed the servants to fill all six stone jars with water to the brim. Each stone jar holds two or three barrels of water, almost twenty to thirty gallons, for a total of about seven hundred liters of water. If divided into 500ml bottles, that's enough for 1,400 bottles of fine wine better than Maotai, far more than anyone at the wedding party could enjoy that day. How abundant is the grace of the Lord!

In addition to Mary's love, faith, and obedience, the reasons God chose her to be the mother of Christ the Messiah, also include her spiritual character of holiness, godliness, meditation, and prayer. Therefore, Mary is a model for today's godly mothers who love the Lord.

From the recording in Bible, for every valued servant God has used, God has first prepared a great mother who loved the Lord godly: such as Moses' mother Joachim, Samuel's mother Hannah, John the Baptist's mother Elisabeth, Timothy's mother Eunice, Mary, the mother of the Lord Jesus, etc. The same applies for God's valued servants in the history of the church, such as Augustine's mother Monica, John Wesley's mother Suzanne, etc.

The Rev. George Campbell Morgan was a great English preacher, and all four of his sons were ministers. Once, someone asked his son, who is the greatest pastor in your family, and his son came out of his mouth, "My mother."

May all mothers today follow the example of these godly and loving mothers.

Finally, let us quote Paul's exhortation to Timothy as an exhortation to all mothers who fear and love the Lord: " But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus." (2Ti 3:14-15)
